I have not seen the movie, unfortunately. But I imagine it's a bit different.
I do know that the new Merlin series is more like Smallville in that it has Merlin and Arthur around the same age and meeting for the first time. Merlin has just come to Camelot and gets told that he and Arthur are two halves of the same coin and that their destiny lies together ^_^
